Photographs by J.-H. Lartigue
"Portraits of All the Things I Lovingly Loved"

The Post Library is pleased to feature photographs by French photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue (1894-1986).  Lartigue's pictures are admired for their casual composition and their depictions of people in action.  In his own words, the photographer says, "The story I have to tell is a love story.  My whole life is a love story: the trees, the blades of grass, the air, the sun, the translucent water, the women--they give me so much love that it is my duty to love them back."

The images in the exhibit were originally taken between 1903 and 1920.  In 1978, Lartigue supervised the production of 10 master contact prints made from his original glass negatives.  These were published in a limited edition portfolio published by Time-Life Books.   Also exhibited is another compilation by Lartigue: "Boyhood Photographs of J.H. Lartigue: The Family Album of a Gilded Age."
